A few years back, I recall talking to my dad and hearing something in his voice that didn’t sound right. I asked, “What’s wrong?”

He sighed and said he was upset about his neighbor’s dog.
Apparently, the neighbor across the street would open his gate and the dog would run straight into my dad’s yard—leaving behind a daily “gift” no one asked for.

After months of hearing the same story, I finally asked:
“Pop, have you talked to the neighbor about the issue?”
“No,” he replied.
“Do you want me to talk to them?”
“No.”
“Would you like to put up a fence to stop the dog?”
“No. I shouldn’t have to,” he snapped.

With the most respect I could find, I said:
“Well, Pop… you’re going to have to deal with the mess.”

That moment stuck with me—not because of the dog, but because of the message.

How many times do we tolerate mess in our relationships, in our organizations, or in our communities?

Mess rarely starts big.
It begins with something small, something “not worth addressing,” something we convince ourselves will go away on its own:
